Canadian Boreal Initiative – Media statement

Montreal, Quebec, April 30, 2009: “Earlier today, the Grand Council of the Crees called for a pause on logging and road and bridge construction in the remaining intact forests in the Broadback River and Lake Evans area,” said Christopher Beck, Québec Advisor for the Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI).

“CBI has recently supported Premier Charest’s commitment to protect 50% of the Québec’s Boreal region, to sustainably develop the other 50%, and to work in close collaboration with the Aboriginal peoples (First Nations and Inuit) who inhabit those lands. The Grand Council of the Crees are playing a leadership role in maintaining critical woodland caribou habitat, and in sustaining the Cree way of life, and these are some of the last intact forests remaining in this area.

We believe that there is a great opportunity for government and industry to move towards a vision of a balance between sustainable development, economic growth, and environmental protection by working together with the Grand Council to ensure the protection of critical caribou habitat and intact forests.”
