Boreal Leadership Council

The Boreal Leadership Council, first convened in December 2003, is comprised of leading conservation groups, First Nations, resource companies and financial institutions, all of which have an interest and a stake in the future of Canada’s Boreal Forest.

Members of the Council are signatories to the Boreal Forest Conservation Framework and are committed to implementing this national vision in their own spheres of activity. These activities are summarized in Action Plans submitted regularly by Council members.

The national vision articulated in the Framework calls for the establishment of a network of large interconnected protected areas covering about half of the country's Boreal Forest and the use of leading-edge sustainable development practices in remaining areas.

The Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI) serves as the secretariat of the Boreal Leadership Council. CBI works with Council members to expand Framework endorsement in key sectors; generate on-the-ground examples of the Framework in action; and create opportunities with governments to engage on both policy and project-based solutions.
